Schoolhouse Test

You can use Schoolhouse Test to create tests and quizzes for your students. Using this program can be very useful especially when designing your midterm exams, as you can easily edit the Testing Committee exams without worrying about formatting issues. You can also use it to quickly randomize questions/answers and automatically generate answer keys. In the sections below, you can find out how to use this program.

If you need further help, you may refer to Schoolhouse's Learning Center and Help Page.

How to install Schoolhouse Test

To install Schoolhouse, simply open the installation file provided by the ELC Testing Committee. The file is called SchoolhouseTestPro41126Setup.exe - a link can be found in the folder below:
SchoolHouse Test

When installing the software, please note:
  • If you are installing the program on a CCQ computer, you will need to contact IT as the installation requires administrative rights and they may need to install additional software on your computer. Contact IT Support and they will come to your office to assist you.
  • Make sure you are using the installation file on the L Drive. If you download and install the file from the Schoolhouse website, you will have a trial version and some features will be locked.

How to use Schoolhouse Test

You can find training videos created by Schoolhouse on their Learning Center site. Note that the software that we use is Schoolhouse Test 4.

  • Multiple choice questions:

  • Fill-in-the-blank questions:
*note: I've found that, in the Answer Key, Schoolhouse 4 annoyingly generates blank underlines with lengths that correspond to the missing word's length -- so a short word will have a short underline for students to fill in, while a long word will have a long underline for the students to fill in. Students may use the line lengths to guess the missing word, which is not very desirable. Because of this issue, I prefer to use "short answer" questions instead of "fill-in-the-blank". See the section Working With ELC Midterm Exams below for instructions on using Short Answer questions.

Working with ELC Midterm Exams

In addition to creating questions as shown in the tutorials above, you may need to follow some additional steps when adapting ELC Midterm Exams. Instructions on these can be found below:
  • Use Short Answer Questions instead of Fill-in-the-blank questions
    • As explained above, Fill-in-the-blank questions can be problematic in Schoolhouse as it generates lines which correspond to the missing word length in the answer key. For this reason, the Testing Committee uses Short Answer questions for vocabulary and other gap-fill questions instead. To create a Short Answer question, see the instructions below:
      1. In Design View, under Item Selection, select Short Answer
      2. In Question, write your question using the underline key for the blank space (ie, CCQ is a college in _).
      3. In Answer, write the answer to the question (ie, Qatar)
      4. By default, Schoolhouse will generate a line under each question. To remove this line, go to Document View > Document Options > Question Items > Short Answer and deselect the box for Short Answer Lines
